A good mix isn't just "loud" and "clean" — it also has depth. Some sounds sit right up in your face while others hang toward the back of the room. At 0 predelay the reverb starts at the same instant as the sound, so the vocal "gets wet" immediately and pushes away. Open it up a little (say 20–50 ms) and the dry vocal hits clearly first, with the reverb sliding in just behind it. The result: a vocal that's both intelligible and backed by real space.

In practice, 20–40 ms is a very safe range for vocals. If you want more separation you can go up to 60–80 ms, but stretch it too far and the tail starts sounding like a separate echo. You can also tie predelay to the tempo: for example, a predelay the length of a 1/16 note locks the tail into the groove (at 120 BPM that's roughly 125 ms, which is on the long side — a 1/32 or a fixed 30 ms usually sits better).

Predelay also changes how "big" the space feels: long predelay reads as a large, distant hall, short predelay as a small, close room. So you can dial in the size of the space with predelay alone, without ever touching the decay.

You set the reverb up on an aux/return channel, make it 100% wet, then feed signal to that return from the vocal channel via a "send." The more signal you send, the more reverb you hear; the dry sound of the lead vocal never changes.

This has two big advantages. First, you can feed several elements (vocal, backing vocals, snare) into a single reverb; they all meet in the same space and the mix feels more unified, more like it was "recorded in the same room." Second, you can put EQ, compression, or a de-esser on the return and apply them only to the effect signal — cleaning up the tail without ever touching the dry vocal.

Whether the send is pre-fader or post-fader matters too: use post-fader almost every time. That way, when you pull the channel fader down, the effect drops proportionally and the balance holds. The same logic applies to delay — set it up on a return and feed it with a send.

Rhythmic Depth With Delay: 1/8, 1/4, Ping-Pong, and Slapback

Delay adds both depth and rhythmic energy by repeating the sound, and it usually stays cleaner than reverb because there's space between the repeats. The number one rule: sync the delay time to the tempo. A free-running delay blurs the groove; a delay locked to a note value "sits" in the song. Common values are 1/4 (quarter), 1/8 (eighth), dotted 1/8 (for a groovy feel), and triplet.

If you'd rather work out the times in your head, the formula is simple: quarter-note length (ms) = 60000 / BPM. At 120 BPM a quarter is 500 ms, an eighth 250 ms, a dotted eighth 375 ms, and a triplet eighth roughly 167 ms. Dotted 1/8 is a favorite in modern pop and rap because it lands between the beats and creates a sliding, off-kilter groove.

Ping-pong delay bounces the repeats between left and right, adding width to the mix; use it carefully on the lead vocal, because pushed too far the vocal can drift off center — but it's fantastic on backing vocals and ad-libs. Slapback is a very short delay around 80–140 ms with a single repeat and low feedback; it adds a retro thickness and a sense of space to a vocal without drowning it in reverb, a classic on rock and rap ad-libs.

Most people will hear your song on a phone speaker, cheap earbuds, or a laptop speaker. These small systems reproduce the low end weakly and make reverb tails sound disproportionately large; a reverb that looks great in the studio can swallow the vocal on a phone. That's why you have to check the mix in mono and on a small speaker. Ping-pong and wide stereo reverbs can weaken or cause phase issues when folded down to mono; in mono the vocal should still sit clear and up front.

General rule: when in doubt, err on the side of less effect. A vocal that feels "a little dry" on headphones is usually just right on a phone and in real-world listening. As a reference, put a well-mixed song you love next to yours at the same level and compare; more often than not the reverb in professional mixes is far more restrained than you'd think.
