How to Mix an 808: The Complete Guide to Bass That Hits Even on a Phone

A great 808 is the backbone of any trap or drill record — but it's also the thing producers get stuck on more than anything else. It happens constantly: an 808 that sounds flawless on studio monitors vanishes on a phone speaker, or the opposite, it swallows the whole track in mud. What is an 808, and why is it so hard to mix?

That's exactly why it's tricky to mix. (1) Most of its energy sits where your ears barely register it and small speakers can't reproduce it at all. (2) Its long tail masks other elements in the mix. Step 1 — Tune your 808
This is the step everyone skips, and it's the most critical. No amount of EQ and compression will make an out-of-tune 808 sit in the mix — it just sounds "wrong." Tune your 808 to the key of the track and the root note of the melody. Use a tuner to find what note the 808 is actually playing, then shift it to the song's key.
- On gliding (slide) 808s, every note travels to a different pitch; tune to the main pitch the notes settle on. If you're not sure, find the spot where it feels "right" when it plays the same note as the most prominent melodic instrument in the track.
Step 2 — Make it mono and clean up the bottom
Low frequencies should be mono. Collapse everything below roughly 120 Hz to mono: stereo bass causes phase cancellation on phone and club systems and thins the low end out to almost nothing. Then cut the useless energy at the very bottom — high-pass below 20–30 Hz. You can't hear that region anyway; it only wastes speaker travel and limiter headroom for no reason.
Step 3 — EQ: cut the mud, open up the body
Now shape the 808 so it makes room for the rest of the mix:
- 200–400 Hz (the mud zone): This is where most of that boxy, cloudy feeling lives. If the 808 is clashing with other elements, cut a few dB here — the mix opens up instantly.
- 60–90 Hz (body/power): This is the 808's chest-hitting punch. Add a gentle boost if you need it, but don't overdo it; too much turns into pumping at the limiter.
- 2–5 kHz (click/attack): The short "click" at the front of the 808 lives here. On a small speaker, this click is usually how you hear that the 808 is even there — nudge it up slightly if it's gone missing.
Step 4 — Saturation: the secret to being heard on a phone
This is the step most people skip, and it's the single most important thing for making an 808 audible on phones, laptops, and Bluetooth speakers. Here's the logic: the 808's fundamental energy lives at 30–60 Hz, and small speakers physically cannot reproduce that frequency. Saturation (harmonic distortion) multiplies the bass and adds harmonics on top of it (e.g. 120, 180, 240 Hz). Your ear and brain use those upper harmonics to "fill in" the fundamental — this is called the missing fundamental effect. The result: you hear the 808 even on a speaker that can't reproduce a single Hz of sub.
- The safest approach is parallel processing: blend a saturated copy alongside the clean 808, so you add the upper harmonics without losing the power down low. Start small — too much brings crackle and harshness. The best test: listen to the mix on a phone speaker.
Step 5 — Compression: consistency from note to note
The 808's problem usually isn't "too loud/too quiet" — it's that it's inconsistent from note to note. If one note booms while the next disappears, the whole mix feels unsteady. Use a medium attack, a medium-slow release, and a ratio around 2:1–4:1, pulling only a few dB of gain reduction. The goal isn't to crush the sound; it's to make every note feel equally powerful. Set the attack too fast and you'll kill the click at the front of the 808, so watch out for that.
Step 6 — Fix the kick and 808 clash
This is the most common problem of all: the kick and 808 compete in the same low region and both turn muddy. There are two core solutions:
The cleanest result usually comes from using both together: a touch of sidechain plus a clear division of frequency labor.
- Sidechain: Duck the 808 for a split second every time the kick hits. That opens space for the kick's transient, then the 808 comes right back. Both sounds read clearly.
- Frequency split: Give the kick the upper-bass and click job (100–200 Hz + 2–5 kHz) and leave the 808 in the sub region. That way the two live in different frequencies and the clash shrinks.
Step 7 — Protect the 808 at the master
When you push the track up in loudness, the limiter's first victim is always the 808 — because it carries the most energy. Over-limiting makes the 808 pump or swallows it entirely. Two rules: (1) Use a reference track — pull up a professionally mixed song you love and set your 808 balance against it; the ear works relatively, not in absolutes. (2) As you push loudness, make sure the 808 is still breathing; don't crush the mix just to chase a number. A common starting target for streaming is around -14 LUFS, but it varies by genre and platform.
